horse jobs that earn over $100,000 a year

When comparing ourselves to the likes of Bart Cummings, who amassed a lifetime net worth of around 20 Million dollars in his horse training career according to Idolnetworth.com. Capturing one of the decent paying horse jobs can seem like an impossible task, I’m here to tell you that’s not the case. For those of us that love horses enough to want to make a career from the industry. Here are some high paying careers that you might not have thought of, and what they get paid.

High Paying Horse jobs

Farrier

$70,000- $158,000

If you aren’t the kind to stray away from a hard days work, being a farrier could be the job for you. Claiming a salary well into the 6 figures is fairly common place throughout the farriering community, marking it as one of the highest paying horse jobs. As an added bonus you could start up your own farriering operation and charge anywhere from $120-$180 per set of shoes. The only catch is, farriering could be one of the most physically taxing jobs a person could do. Be prepared to earn that new car!

Equine Vet

$78,000-$138,000

As far as horse jobs go, the equine vet commands the most respect throughout the horse world. Although the salary is substantial, I’m not sure they get paid what they are worth. The schooling that takes place is more than 8 years to achieve your DVM or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. That is a whole lot of knowledge and university fee’s that are often underappreciated.

Equine Dentist

$78,000-$138,000

In terms of bang for buck the equine dentist might be one of the best horse jobs going around. Earning similar money to an average vet is nothing to be sniffed at. With the minimal schooling needed (6 months) this is definitely a great career option for someone with a bit of smarts and a lot of patience. An equine dentist will charge anything from $75-$120 per horse and can generally be done in less than 30 minutes.

Equine Chiropractor

$45,000- $112,000

There are many forms of equine body therapy including chiropractor, bowen therapy and PEMF therapy. Each kind claims its own price. However the equine chiropractor businesses are definitely a great option, charging anywhere from $70- $120 per horse and in many cases be done in less than 10 minutes. If you don’t mind your clients looking at you like a disappointed wife “what, is that it” then this may well be the one for you.

Horse Rehabilitation

$68,000- $110,000

Horse rehabilitation is quite a specialised field and therefor can charge large amounts for their services. Offering a range of mobility and strength recovery training, including treadmills and swimming pools. If you’re a great horse career this might be the high paying job you’re looking for.

Race Jockey

Average $80,496 + 5% of race winnings

Being a great jockey can be extremely lucrative. Jockeys generally work as sole contractors to bigger racing stables after completing their apprenticeship. The average salary is nothing compared to the potential takings for a jockey that wins a few races each weekend. If a race has $100,000 up for first place that’s $5k to the jockey (not uncommon). You could see how winning a few races each weekend would become one of the highest paying horse jobs pretty quickly. The only problem is, race weight is 49-54kgs I don’t know about you but I like food more than that.

Horse Trainer

$54,000- $82,000 + 10% of race winnings

The size of the pay packet for a horse trainer is severely weighted on just how good you are. Like Bart Cummings you could amass a great fortune if you have the skill to do so. For reference last years Melbourne cup winning trainer took home $440,000 for his 10% cut… Now that’s a good day at the races.

Horse Breaker

$54,000- $82,000

The humble horse breaking trade is quite lucrative indeed when you look into the numbers. A horse breaker will charge anywhere from $300-$500 a week for their services. I know of many horse breakers that are working with 20 horses at any time. I don’t usually do public math but that’s close to $10k a week before expenses. Not bad for not needing any formal qualifications.

Horse Jobs wrap up

As we have now discovered there is no shortage of money to be made in the horse industry, for those that are willing to take it. The main thing is that old cliché, chose a career that makes you happy.
